What about grocery stores makes us fat?

Principal Investigator: Guadalupe X. 'Suchi' Ayala. PhD, MPH

This study aims to develop and test a method for classifying grocery stores on degree of healthfulness and examine whether this degree of healthfulness is associated with prevalence of overweight/obesity among Latinos who frequent these stores. In addition, the program aims to identify a feasible and cost-effective method of working with grocery store managers and food suppliers to create healthier store environments. Project activities include developing a systematic enumeration process of all food stores in the South Bay region of San Diego County, assessing identified stores on a number of dimensions using observational methods, and interviewing store managers and food suppliers. These data will inform an environmental-change intervention that seeks to increase access and availability of healthy foods to disadvantaged and ethnically diverse populations.
